Forgotten Hill: Puppeteer is a point-and-click horror puzzle game from the Forgotten Hill series. You are shut inside a strange house of dolls, marionettes and tangled strings, and the only way out is to poke at everything until the place gives up its secrets. There is no combat and no timer. The tension comes from the atmosphere: a creaking room, a doll that seems to have moved, and a nagging sense that someone is watching you work.

If you came to FNAF Plus for Five Nights at Freddy's, this is a different kind of scare. Freddy's is about surviving a shift with limited power. Puppeteer is slower and more thoughtful, closer to an escape-room story than a survival game. What the two share is the uneasy mood of toys that are not quite lifeless, which is why it sits comfortably on this shelf.

How to play

The game is played almost entirely with the mouse. Move the cursor around each scene, click the items and objects that react, and use the buttons and bar on screen to open your inventory or change view. Anything you pick up goes into the inventory, and many puzzles need you to combine or use those items on the right part of a room.

A typical session is a loop of looking, collecting and unlocking. You find a locked drawer, a mechanism or a code, then hunt through other rooms for whatever fits it. Doors and passages open one at a time, so the house slowly reveals itself. Turn the sound up, because audio cues often tell you that something has changed before you notice it on screen.

Tips

  • Click everything, twice if needed. Objects sometimes give a different result after you have picked up something else.
  • When you are stuck, revisit earlier rooms. New items usually belong to a puzzle you skipped past.
  • Note down codes, symbols and number sequences you see. They tend to turn up again in a different room.
  • Try each inventory item on a suspicious object before hunting for a new one.

Forgotten Hill: Surgery and Forgotten Hill: The Wardrobe are the closest relatives, with the same style of click-and-solve escape in different settings. The Left Behind: A Forgotten Hill Tale continues the series. For a more action-driven scare, Fear Response and Horror Dungeon 3D put you in more direct danger, and Five Nights at Freddy's remains the pick if you want pure survival tension.

It suits patient players who like solving puzzles more than reacting to jump scares, and it works well in short sittings because you can stop at any room and come back later.
